To build any container pond, water garden, or fountain, the first choice to make is what type of container to use. There are many to choose from including low metal bowls, sealed/glazed ceramic pots, half whiskey barrels and galvanized tubs and water troughs. All of these will hold water.
So, why choose a galvanized container?
Gardeners and landscaping enthusiasts love galvanized containers for their timeless rustic appearance. You may already have one around the house that you can repurpose as a water feature.
Galvanized steel tubs, buckets, and water troughs are available in a wide variety of sizes and shapes. I have even found some nice oval shaped tubs on Amazon and at home stores.
You can create anything from a small patio table water feature using a decorative 6 inch planter up to a huge water trough and any size in between those two extremes with galvanized containers.
Half whiskey barrels only really come in one size and glazed ceramics are pretty, but the very large ones come at a high cost and can get very heavy. If you want to go big with a container water feature, a galvanized water trough or water tank will be the easiest type of container to install that you can buy.
Galvanized steel containers are made to be durable, light weight, and last for years outdoors.
If you don’t care for the look of galvanized steel, it can be painted. Just be sure to prepare the surface by applying a primer designed for painting galvanized steel before you paint. Also, I would avoid painting the inside of the container. Painting below the water level will just eventually cause the paint to peel away.
