Painted rocks can be a fun project that’s not difficult for older children or adults especially when you employ some tricks.
Silhouette painting (where you only see a back-lighted outline of an image) is easy to do and doesn’t take any technical painting skills. You simply paint an image in black and use a lighter color for the sky around it.
Here are some examples:

Some Tips When Painting Terracotta Pots & Rocks
Use rocks that have a polished smooth texture on the outside like beach pebbles or river rock. The smooth surface is much easier to paint and the end product will look much better.
Clean the pots/rocks and allow to dry completely before painting. Use acrylic paint designed for outdoor use or patio paint. After your paint has dried, apply 1-3 coats of an outdoor clear spray sealer.
As you can see some of these ideas are pretty simple to make and very fun to display. I’m sure you have already come up with ideas to put your own twist on one or more of these to make it your own.
